Doesn’t your heart skip a beat every time you see your baby waking up with a smile on his face and joy in his eyes? I can go any miles to see that peace on his face. I am sure all parents do.
I am a mother of a kid who just turned 1 this August. My husband and I were elated to have Samaksh in our lives. Even before we could sink in, everything changed, literally! Before I take you to my sweet-and-sour journey of parenthood, let me ask you a question.
When was the last time you had a sound and uninterrupted sleep? While most of you can say almost every day; it can be the toughest question for new parents, especially a mother.
Bedtime issues often continue to be paramount in parents’ minds long after 1styear. A study, in fact, claims that parents don’t get adequate sleep for six years after the birth of their child. (I know it scares me to death too!)
Say no to nuskhes.
When, Samaksh, my baby started waking up hourly, the pain of tossing and turning throughout nights became nightmares for us. Initially we thought this problem would be temporary and we would soon be able to follow his sleeping patterns. Sadly, we couldn’t have been more wrong.
Before my patience completely expired, I tried almost everything to get my little one to fall asleep and stay asleep.Unfortunately, 6-month-old kids are too young to be taught how to fall asleep. No amount of baby sleep solution from Google and nuskhes (tips) from chacha, nani, daadi and bua could save us from tiring and sleepless nights.
Mighty Mommy goes extra miles.
How it pulls on your heartstrings when your baby won’t sleep. Everything goes right out the window when it comes to your baby’s health. As my struggle to wade through sleepless nights continues, I came up with a few ways to deal with them if not get rid of them.
Cradling – the universal trick: Nothing can beat the power of ‘tale-as-old-as-time’ cradling. (Well, not everybody can afford to buy a vibrating bed that soothes babies from cryingJ)
Laughter – the stress buster: Asthey say, laughter is the best medicine, unleashed your baby’s inner giggle monster. Ease your baby’s anxiety and built-up stress.
Soothing sound: Try and make all possible sounds that comfort your baby.
Massaging face: Samaksh enjoyed it the most! In no time, massaging his face with the tip of my fingers will put him to bed. (Yes, it’s that simple.J)
Tantrums as the journey of solids begin
Yay! Your baby is 6-months-old now and you couldn’t be happier! Your baby will no longer be dependent only on breastfeeding. It’s time to introduce your kid to solid foods.
Like any parent we thought Samaksh is the cutest baby on planet Earth, but even more fortunate was our discovery that he was an incredible eater. Our other mom and dad friends were constantly complaining about the hard time they were having feeding their little ones. Samaksh, on the other hand, enjoyed almost everything I would feed him.
Much to our dismay, he gradually started throwing tantrums. Without much ado, I did my share of research about a balanced food for a kid. After making a mind map of all the iron and vitamins, I decided to spread the little wings of the chef inside me.
Boost the basics
Don’t get hurt/ me wrong if I say that Cerelac isn’t the only option in the whole world. I found it myself. Sticking to the basic ingredients that an infant requires, I made Sweet Dalia(broken wheat cereals, milk, water, jaggery and some crushed dry fruits), Mix Veggies Khichdi, Apple Rice (in puree form), and Banana Pancakes. With time, I keep including more ingredients into his meals like a portion of cheese and more dry fruits.
Finger foods
I am lucky as my munchkin is least fussy with finger fruits. This doesn’t only help him promote the development of his jaw strength and tongue movement; it also enhances his sensory processing (sight, touch, movement, smell, and hearing). Sucking into his baby fruit feeder also remains his favorite time pass.
Mash it up
I don’t really need culinary skills to keep my baby healthy. The trick to get your kid not just gulping your food but enjoying it as well lies in sticking to the basics and mashing the food as much as you can.
